Freshman Kev'iya “Yaya” Parrish delivered a historic performance, scoring 51 points in a dominant 74–39 victory over Withrow. The performance etched her name into the Western Hills record books.
Parrish’s 51-point night broke a 35-year single-game scoring record previously held by Tonya Hunt ’90, who set the mark with 48 points. Through her first 12 games of high school basketball, Parrish has hit the ground running. Averaging 34.9 points, 4.4 assists, 7.5 rebounds, and an impressive 8.1 steals per game.
We sat down with the new single-game scoring record holder to talk about her early success as a Mustang.
We asked Parrish about what she believes has set her up for success this early in her career.
"It's really been Coach LA. (LaRonda Castleberry) and her staff. It's also been the constant work that I put in with my team. This summer, we had camps and practices every day. I feel like it really got me ready to play day 1."
When asked how it feels to be the new single-game scoring record holder Parrish kept it short and sweet with "It feels Great"
